No fishy food bill: Elon Musk didn’t say Pentagon spent $600 million annually on sushi

If Your Time is short

  • This claim originated on a parody account. Musk didn’t say it.

Social media claims about the Pentagon spending $600 million annually on sushi don’t pass the smell test.

But some users continue to credit such a report to entrepreneur Elon Musk, whom President Donald Trump empowered to head the Department of Government Efficiency, a government waste-targeting advisory board.

"Good morning X!" text in an image posted Feb. 3 on Facebook said, with the caption "Elon Musk report." "My experience with DOGE has been totally wild so far. I told you yesterday about the $600 million per year the Pentagon was spending on sushi … Well, I just found another wild one! The Air Force was spending $1,280 per paper coffee cup! Like literally those ones you find at the office. $1280!!! WE also found that $230K per month was being spent by the IRS on Starbucks Cinnamon Roast K Cups, but everyone was working from home!"

The entire statement originated on a parody account on X.

The account, with a handle that makes clear it’s not Musk — @iamnot_elon — notes in its bio it is "NOT Elon Musk" and that "this is parody account."

But some social media users that have shared this fabricated statement, such as this Facebook post, lack such a caveat.

We rate claims it’s an authentic statement from Musk False.
