If Your Time is short

  • This photo was taken during protests in Paris on Dec. 5, not in Portland, Ore., where demonstrators have protested an eviction.

For months demonstrators have protested the eviction of a Black and indigenous family in Portland, Ore., but an image of two people with arms outstretched amid smoke on a city street does not show that effort.

Some social media posts claim otherwise.

"MAYHEM in Oregon!" one post says. "Violence Erupts!"

This post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)

Readers qui parle français may have noticed that the storefront in the image says Carrefour Market, a French chain

Indeed, the photo was taken by AFP photographer Anne-Christine Poujoulat in Paris on Dec. 5. The photo shows demonstrators protesting against a proposed security law that would restrict people from filming police officers among other controversial rules.

We rate this Facebook post False.
