President Donald Trump announced March 5, 2026 that he was firing Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary and named her “special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas.” Trump announced he was replacing Noem with Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma effective March 31. The U.S. Senate confirmed Noem to the homeland security role on Jan. 25, 2025. Noem was elected governor of South Dakota in 2018 after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.
